Entrepreneurship in Vasastan

On Thursday April 16th Margaret Patane, former vice president of Stockholms Intl Rotary Club, welcomed 17 SIRC members to her New York Stories bookstore in Vasastan. A small gathering, yes, yet none-the-poorer in quality for its slight quantity, and certainly more intimate in a literary and spiritual sense.

With characteristic charm and hubris, Margaret shared with us her “prescription” for entrepeneurship and took us for a walking tour of Vasastan’s bookshop pearls in the vicinity (dans le voisinage). Being passionate and enlisting a skillful accountant are two key ingredients for the entrepreneur, according to Margaret. Who knows, perhaps there’s a correlation between the accountant’s degree of skill and the bookstore owner’s depth of passion.

We listened to Nina Suatan describe reading group programs offered at the children’s bookstore Bokspindeln and then strolled down to bookshop and holistic health center Mareld on Hälsingegatan for some wine, cheese and light appetizers. Bengt Weine, publishing expert and coordinator of Mareld, sung the praises of his counselors/coaches and assured us that Stockholm’s bookstores would continue to come up with creative combinations of products and services to help subsidize the less lucrative end of the business, soft and hardback spines. I recommend taking a look at Marelds “samtalskort” for an example of a novel method of attracting book-loving customers to a bookshop’s premises.

500:- kronor of the evening’s proceedings were donated to the Polioplus project.

The total PolioPlus funds raised by our club to date this Rotary year is 14,500:- SEK, a couple hundred dollars (with today’s exchange rate) in excess of the target of $1500 per year set by The Rotary Foundation . Hearty congratulations to our club!
