SIRC’s first community service project — a wonderfully successful Food & Supplies Drive — was held in February 2004 to support the Liberia Dujar Association (LDA) and to donate food and non-perishables to Stadsmissionen.
As part of its mission, Liberia Dujar Association supports education projects in Liberia. Their efforts include rebuilding schools and providing furnishings, educational materials, and funding for teacher salaries. This year, SIRC donated food and educational supplies to two newly opened schools:
The Grassfield School in Monrovia serves 600-700 Kindergarten through 12th-grade students between the ages 5 -29. There is a one-year waiting list to enroll in Grassfield’s traditional curriculum or in their Karl-Axel Elmquist Vocational training center. The LASS High School (Lamco Area School System) in Yekepa County has an enrollment of 450 students between 16 – 28 in a traditional educational setting.
Margaret Patane, SIRC member and Country Manager to SN Brussels Airlines, served as an integral part of a delegation that personally delivered the club’s donations to the schools in Liberia. Other members of the delegation included Lois Boyenoh Hemgren, Managing Director of LDA; Ann Huber Powell, member of the LDA Board of Directors; and Lotta Palmelius, Journalist for ICA Kuriren. Ann and Lotta both attended grammar school in Yekepa County.
A warm, heartfelt THANK YOU to participating members and to SN Brussels Airlines who generously flew the delegation and supplies to Liberia.
